Welcome to the Wiki Wiki Web, also known as "Wiki". A lot of people had their first wiki experience here. This community has been around since 1995 and consists of many people. We always accept newcomers with valuable contributions. If you haven't used a wiki before, be prepared for a bit of Culture Shock. The usefulness of Wiki is in the freedom, simplicity, and power it offers.

This site's primary focus is People Projects And Patterns in Software Development. However, it is more than just an Informal History Of Programming Ideas. It started there, but the theme has created a culture and Dramatic Identity all its own. All Wiki content is Work In Progress. Most of all, this is a forum where people share ideas! It changes as people come and go. Much of the information here is subjective. If you are looking for a dedicated reference site, try Wiki Pedia; Wiki Is Not Wikipedia!

Browse via Starting Points, or use the Find Page search facility to find your way.

This website and the software it runs on were created by Ward Cunningham for the Portland Pattern Repository. It is home to an Informal History Of Programming Ideas as well as a large volume of material recording related discourses and collaboration between its readers.

The content is written by the users -- people like you and me. Anyone can change any page or create new pages. Read the Text Formatting Rules to find out how, and then go to the Wiki Wiki Sandbox to try it yourself. Please use the Wiki Wiki Sandbox if you want to experiment with how editing works. If you make a page you don't want to keep, just replace its text with the word "delete".

This website is the first ever "wiki", where content can be edited by any person. All other wikis, including Wikipedia and Wikiquote and Wiktionary, are descended from it. Wikipedia is now the fifth most visited website according to Alexa (Rank).

People should know a little Wiki History.

Please read widely on this Wiki before adding new wiki pages or editing an old one. This helps to reduce unnecessary clutter.

If you like the wiki concept and want to use a wiki for your own purposes (such as discussing topics other than those mentioned above), please consider other Public Wiki Forums, or look at the Running Your Own Wiki Faq. There are many Wiki Wiki Clones and Wiki Engines available. You can get help on Choosinga Wiki if you are overwhelmed by the big list of options.

Wiki Squatting (using Wiki as personal Web space), Walled Gardens (a series of self-contained pages within a larger wiki), Chat Mode (Thread Mode without cleanup), and especially Wiki Spam (commercial advertising) are all frowned upon. We have several related Sister Sites - religious debates or similar material are better suited to The Adjunct; purely artistic or whimsical stuff goes to Green Cheese (currently defunct).

When learning Text Formatting Rules to edit pages, please use the Wiki Wiki Sandbox for all your trial edits.
